Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives selected as Wildscreen Finalist

Bristol, UK, June 12, 2008Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War has been selected as a finalist for Wildscreen, the world's largest and most prestigious international wildlife and environmental film festival, held every two years in Bristol, UK. For over 25 years, Wildscreen has attracted hundreds of delegates from around the globe who work in film, television and the press, as well as those actively involved in working to conserve the environment. Wildscreen 2008 will take place from October 19-24.

Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives is one of three finalists – and the only American film – selected for the Natural History Museum Environment category, which focuses on conservation, issues of sustainability and environment, and the need to protect the natural world. Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives will compete with the other finalists for a coveted Panda Award – the “Oscar” of environmental film (click here for a complete listing of finalists.)

Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives premiered on opening night at the 2008 DC Environmental Film Festival, garnering strong public and critical acclaim. The 68-minute documentary was written, produced and directed by Alice and Lincoln Day in partnership with VideoTakes, Inc. Dan Gallagher co-produced, co-wrote and edited the documentary while VideoTakes President Sandy Cannon-Brown supervised the project.

Alice and Lincoln Day have jointly published several books on issues of the environment and population, but Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives is their first film. In 2005 the Days contacted Chris Palmer, founder and director of American University’s Center for Environmental Filmmaking and CEO of VideoTakes, about creating a documentary on the environmental impact of war and preparations for war. Palmer turned to two of his graduate students, Dan Gallagher and Katie Gerringer, to develop a treatment, and to his production company, VideoTakes, Inc., to create a five-minute trailer.

The 2006 DC Environmental Film Festival premiered the trailer for Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives, leading to a longer work-in-progress shown the 2007 DC Environmental Film Festival. Throughout 2007 the Days and VideoTakes worked continuously to bring the feature-length version to the screen. Production took the filmmakers to Australia, California, Vermont, Maryland, the District of Colombia and Virginia.

Completed in March for the 2008 DC Environmental Film Festival, Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives weaves expert interviews and archival footage into a powerful exposé on the environmental costs of war, highlighting tragically overlooked impacts on land, air, and water, biodiversity and natural resources.
